England my England

For whatever reason, I believe a situation exists with the UK, and in particular with England, that doesn’t really have any true comparison in the world.  You’re not supposed to be proud of your nationality.  Maybe it is getting better these days, but even the Union Jack among many, is associated with racism and fascism.  It’s fucking pathetic!  The Scots, The Welsh, The Northern Irish, they can all escape from it to a degree with their own local national pride in their small countries.  When it comes to England it’s a completely different matter.

We are the most apologetic nation on earth.  In America kids start school and every day they sing “The Star Sprangled Banner” in other words their national anthem.  They’re almost forced to sing it.  In this country you get the impression that if our government imposed a similar policy, in encouraging pride in our nationality, that they’d be accused of being far right politicians with borderline racist tendencies.  I have one word for these type of people, well two actually.  FUCK OFF!  I’m a white British citizen, I respect all cultures, and no white person in England is better or worse than any other person of a different creed or colour.  Surely though if you want to be part of this country, you should take great pride in the achievements of the country in which you were born.  I’m quite proud of the fact that racism is far less prevalent in this country. than it is in virtually every country in the world.  It’s a magnificent thing we take for granted here, that racists are exposed and dealt with, and are made to feel ostracised from society.  In other countries you are judged on your colour not here.

Being British, being English to me, is something I am very proud of.  I don’t need to list our global achievements on the world, everything from inventions, to saving the world in world wars, to my favourite one of the lot creating football.  I’m immensely proud of being English.  We’ve had dark points in our history where we haven’t exactly covered ourselves in glory, what country hasn’t, but these are heavily outweighed by our outstanding achievements in almost any field you care to mention.

So why does the media, society and indeed the national persona make it so difficult to be proud of being English?  It’s such a difficult thing to answer, I think you could write a book on the reasons why, but what it is is a NATIONAL SHAME.  I for one am proud to be geordie, proud to be British, and fucking definitely proud to be English.

I am jealous of other countries though.  In Holland in Euro 2000, everyone and I mean everyone was decked in orange, they were so proud of their little country, with their magnificent football team, and their unique culture.  I was quite jealous.  Here if England have a half decent team you get a few cars flying flags during tournaments, but as soon as we get knocked out, it’s “fuck them too many cockneys/geordies/bindippers/mancs *depending on where you’re from* in the team.”

You saw the Poles last night.  How proud they were of being Polish, a country which has been invaded more times than Katie Price’s fanny, where their economy is so average half their population end up looking for work in other countries.  They’re proud, but we’re not allowed to be.

I think people these try to be alternative.  “Fuck England I don’t care they’re overpaid arseholes.” A fair point to be fair, but are we the only country in the world with overpaid arseholes?  At the end of the day, they represent our magnificent country, where people are so fucking afraid of upsetting others, we’re not even allowed to focus on the brilliant things we’ve got here, and our global impact, instead we’re supposed to whinge about what cunts we are while everyone else in Europe gladly joins in.

I for one, am thrilled to bits England qualified for the World Cup Finals, we’re not going to win it, but we have a manager (toon fan too) who is a decent bloke, who is creating a new team with decent young unassuming kids, and old campaigners who we can be proud of. The likes of Phil Jagielka, he plays for a mickey mouse club, he’s probably on £30,000 a week as opposed to his predecessor John Terry who’s on five times more, and he’s there for his love of the country and the honour of playing for the national team.  I was proud of England last night, we’re not Spain, we’re not even Holland, but we’ve got a good bunch of lads again, who will do their best over there and may surprise a few.  Anyway look around the world, compare your countries achievements with any other country you care to, if you’re still in a mood of being a cool kid who doesn’t care how your country does, then you’re no better than those scouse arseholes who chant “we’re not English we are scouse.”

Well done Woy, well done younguns, you’ve restored some pride in our national team.
